From a non-designated region (for example the USA, South Korea or France). D-days count back from your arrival day in Japan. D-210 is the shortest path the official intervals allow (30 days between vaccines + 180-day wait): start earlier.
D-210 or earlier
1. ISO microchip
ISO 11784/11785 chip (15 digits), implanted before the first rabies vaccine.
D-210 or earlier
2. 1st rabies vaccine
After the microchip (same day is fine), at 91 days old or more. Inactivated or recombinant vaccine.
30+ days later
3. 2nd rabies vaccine
At least 30 days after the 1st, within its effective period.
D-180 or earlier
4. Blood test, approved lab
Drawn after the 2nd vaccine (same day is fine) at a designated laboratory; titre ≥ 0.5 IU/ml; valid 2 years.
180 days
5. 180-day wait
Arrive at least 180 days after the blood sample (sample day = day 0).
D-40 or earlier
6. Notify AQS
Advance notification to AQS at your arrival airport, at least 40 days before arrival (NACCS online, or e-mail).
≤ 10 days before boarding
7. Vet check before departure
Clinical inspection by a vet: no signs of rabies (dogs: also leptospirosis).
Before departure
8. Official certificate
Certificate (e.g. Form AC) endorsed by the exporting country’s government authority. Original required.
D0 · arrival
9. Import inspection
Bring your pet in its crate or carrier to AQS on arrival in Japan.
If something is missing or wrong
Pets that do not meet the requirements, or arrive with certificate errors, are detained at an AQS facility for up to 180 days or shipped back. A wait shorter than 180 days means detention to make up the shortfall. AQS suggests sending copies of your certificates in advance for a check.
