Know before you ride.
Taxi and rideshare pet rules, service-animal access, and a calmer trip from pickup to drop-off.
Ordinary pets and service animals follow different rules. This is a practical guide, not legal advice. Availability and local rules vary: verify with provider.
Before booking a taxi or rideshare
- For an ordinary pet, confirm acceptance before pickup. Ask about the species, size, carrier, seating position and any pet or cleaning charges. Taxi policies are local: verify with provider.
- Use a suitable carrier or secure restraint; keep a leash handy. Do not let your animal roam. Ask where your pet should sit and bring a clean blanket for the seat.
- Check the app’s pet option and fare before confirming. There is no universal pet supplement; no fee amount is promised here.

Uber Pet & Lyft Pet rides
Uber Pet: select the pet option where available. Uber recommends a leash, harness or carrier for dogs and cats, and a carrier for other pets. A pet trip may cost extra; cleaning or damage charges may apply. Check the local app and provider policy.

Lyft Pet rides: available in selected US markets for one well-behaved animal. An additional fee applies. Pets should ride in a carrier, on a blanket or at your feet. Check availability and the fare in the app.

Service animals: United States
Under the ADA, a service dog is trained to perform work or tasks for a person with a disability. Emotional support alone does not qualify. Keep the dog under control; leash or harness exceptions apply when disability or task performance prevents their use.
When the task is not obvious, the permitted questions concern whether the dog is required because of a disability and what task it is trained to perform. The ADA guidance does not require service-dog certificates or medical documents. State and local rules can provide additional protections.

Uber and Lyft require drivers to accommodate service animals. You do not need to select a pet ride, and service-animal transport does not carry an extra pet charge. Uber prohibits cleaning fees for service-animal hair or shedding. Report a refusal or improper charge through the provider’s support.

Canada: check the province
There is no single pet-taxi policy for every province. In Ontario, guide dogs and service animals must be allowed in taxis, and passengers with disabilities must be charged the same rate. Pet fees do not apply to service animals. Identification and documentation rules differ from the US: Ontario may accept regulated-health-professional documentation when the animal is not readily identifiable. For another province, verify with provider and the provincial authority.

A calmer ride
Practical suggestions, not additional legal requirements: prepare the carrier before pickup, choose a quiet waiting spot, keep familiar bedding nearby, allow time for a relief break, and keep your animal supervised. Tell the driver about safe loading needs before boarding.
